NORFOLK, Va. — Traffic is being diverted off of I-64 eastbound at 15th View in Norfolk after a truck carrying U.S. mail caught fire early Wednesday morning.

VDOT first alerted us about the fire, which occurred near the 273 mile marker, just before 6 a.m. Traffic was at one point backed up for 10 miles.

Just before 9 a.m., Virginia State Police said all eastbound lanes are shut down and they are diverting traffic while they attempt to remove the vehicle.

Norfolk Fire-Rescue tells us the tractor-trailer—which was a postal vehicle—was the only vehicle impacted by the fire. The driver was not hurt, and neither were any firefighters or other drivers, fire officials say.

The fire is extinguished, and Norfolk Fire-Rescue says they're working with the Coast Guard to assess runoff into the surrounding water and wetlands.

We'll update this article once we learn more.
