St. Johns County's American Flag Rescue Program properly retires over 11,000 flags by collecting old and worn flags at drop boxes dispersed throughout the county. On Friday, June 14, Americans will celebrate Flag Day with a history that dates to June 14, 1777, when the Continental Congress approved the design of one national American flag. Touting 26 modifications to date, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation cementing June 14 as National Flag Day in 1916. President Harry Truman signed the date into law in 1949.
