YPSILANTI, MI -- Ypsilanti Symphony Orchestra played a free outdoor concert at Riverside Park on Saturday, May 27.
Just before the 2 p.m. start time, a couple hundred people gathered in pools of shade, setting up blankets and lawn chairs.
Adam Riccinto, the event’s founder and music director, welcomed the crowd with words of gratitude.
“Whether we may disagree about conflicts over the years, we’ve always been able to come together as a community to pay tribute to those who have sacrificed,” Riccinto said.
In the spirit of Memorial Day weekend, the symphony played patriotic tunes and family-friendly classics.
The orchestra was joined by Sander and Lazlo Slomovits, as well as San’s daughter Emily. The brothers, who have been playing together for 50 years, are an Ann Arbor-based duo who go by the name of Gemini. When Emily joins, the trio like to call themselves ‘Gemily.’ The group played a variety of traditional and contemporary folk songs with interactive hand gestures to include audience participation.
