MADERA, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – The City of Madera commemorated the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center by welcoming an inaugural monument dedicated to first responders.

According to Justin Macomb with Cal Fire, work on the project started in December 2021 when people locally found out there were salvaged World Trade Center beams available on the West Coast thanks to a company in New Jersey called Sim’s Metal.

“We were awarded the beam,” Macomb said. “With the help of the Madera County Board of Supervisors and several other donors they provided funding and this is what you see behind us.”

Macomb says the monument is an important addition to the collection of monuments throughout the Central Valley for those in the northern valley.

“It’s a great location for us to remember the lives lost on 9/11,” Macomb said. “We have a memorial in Clovis, we never had one in Madera. We had the Chowchilla Fire Chief here but it honors everybody. It incorporates everyone here locally.”
