Warmer temperatures are leading to a potentially explosive season of blue-green algae blooms.

Yorktown's town board just approved $340,000 to build an oxygen pumping system to aerate the lake and prevent algae growth.

Blue-green algae can produce toxins strong enough to kills pets and harm humans.

Lake Mohegan had to be closed for swimming for several weeks last year because of a buildup of this toxic algae.

Residents say they are hopeful this new system will help.

"We are looking forward to seeing what the impact is. There is no silver bullet when it comes to reducing phosphorus levels in a lake," says Ken Belfore, of the Mohegan Lake Improvement District.

Yorktown officials hope to unveil the new aeration system in July.
