Former Yonkers officer admits trying to buy firearm by fraudulent means

A former Yonkers police officer admitted to attempting to purchase a firearm by fraudulent means.
Sanjay Richards, of Yonkers, pleaded guilty this week to possession of a forged instrument in the second degree, according to the Westchester DA's Office.
The 42-year-old was a police officer in Yonkers in 2020 when he attempted to purchase a firearm from a gun shop in Mount Vernon.
Authorities say he produced an unlawfully altered police identification card by concealing part of the card that displays a no firearms restriction.
He had been placed on modified duty due to an off-duty incident in another jurisdiction and his authority to possess a gun had been revoked.
As part of his plea deal, Richards has been promised a sentence of a three-year conditional discharge.
Richards, a six year department veteran, was fired in 2021.
