The Yelm boys tennis team narrowly fell short of its first win of the 2023 season, falling to North Thurston 3-2 at home on Friday, Sept. 15.
With the loss, the Tornados fell to 0-3 on the season. But for head coach Mike McClellan, the young team’s improvement from its first two matches was a positive sign.
“It was pretty gutsy,” McClellan said of his team’s effort. “They hung in there and never gave up. I think everybody has improved a lot. Most of these players have only been playing tennis for a month, since the first practice.”
The Tornados also competed against Central Kitsap on Monday, Sept. 18 and were defeated 5-0 to fall to 0-4 on the season. The team visited River Ridge on Wednesday, Sept. 20, but results were not available as of press time.
They will next host Gig Harbor on Friday.
