LOCAL SPORTS 6-2-23

The Yankton Gazelles fell in yesterday’s opening round of the class AA state softball tournament, as they were defeated 7 to 1 by top seeded Sioux Falls Lincoln.

            Kyra Tjeerdsma was the only Gazelle to record multiple hits in the game, while Payton Moser went 1 for 3 and scored the lone run for Yankton.

            Yankton begins play in the consolation bracket at 10:00 AM this morning, as they meet Sioux Falls Washington. Yankton earned a 7 to 6 victory when the two teams met in the regular season. Coverage of the game will be provided on KYNT, as Jeff Duffy will be on the call.

Today is the opening day of the Kyle Mueller classic, and the Yankton post 12 baseball team will bookend today’s action.

            Yankton gets the festivities started at 10:00 AM as they meet Sioux Falls post 15 at Riverside Field. Yankton will then play at 6:30, as they will meet Lincoln SE in the last game of day one.

            Pregame coverage for game one will begin at 9:30 AM on KYNTV alone, due to Gazelles state softball, with the second game’s coverage scheduled to begin at 6:00 PM on both KYNT and KYNTV. Bryce Ladwig and Brayden Butler will be on the call.

            Yankton Quarterback Club will be hosted in a new site for the 2023-24 season, as the weekly meeting will now be held at River Rocks Event Center following the closure of JoDean’s

            The format will remain unchanged from previous years, as the meetings will begin on August 23rd. The first featured guest speaker is scheduled to be Yankton Bucks head football coach Brady Muth.

            The South Dakota Coyotes bolstered their roster again yesterday, as they announced the signing of Jalen Hayes from Richfield, Minnesota.

            Hayes, a 6 foot 2 inch guard, averaged 13 points per game last season, as he was named an all-star, and was selected as a member of the all-conference and all-defensive teams for his senior year.

            Hayes will enroll in the fall, and plans to study business administration at South Dakota.

South Central Baseball League Results (For 6-1-23):

  • Lesterville defeated Wynot 14 to 7, Mount Marty Lancer Ethan Wishon pitched five innings with six strikeouts in the win.
  • Tabor outlasted Menno 6 to 5 in an extra-innings thriller that went 14 innings.

  • #4 Sioux Falls Jefferson topped #5 Sioux Falls Washington 8 to 2.

  • #1 Dell Rapids beat #8 Lennox 21 to 5.
  • #2 West Central defeated #7 Beresford 16 to 1.
  • #3 Dakota Valley topped #6 Elk Point-Jefferson 15 to 5.
  • #4 Madison were defeated by #5 Tea Area 5 to 4.

In Class B:

  • #1 Alcester-Hudson outlasted #8 Hanson 4 to 2.
  • #2 Arlington defeated #7 Viborg-Hurley 13 to 6.
  • #3 Castlewood were victorious over #6 Deuel 13 to 3.
  • #4 Bon Homme shutout #5 Gayville-Volin 6 to 0.
