ROUNDUP: Every Local 1A/2B/1B School With State Track Athletes Earned Medals

Six Lewis and South Thurston County runners made the 2B boys 3200 meter run finals the State track and field meet in Yakima on Saturday, May 27.

Every local school that sent athletes to the 1A/2B/1B State track and field meet in Yakima over the weekend will see medals in return. Runners, throwers and jumpers from 1A Tenino, 1B schools Mossyrock and Pe Ell, and 2B schools Napavine, Rainier, Winlock, Adna, Toledo, Onalaska and Morton-White Pass, earned placements on the podium for events. Mossyrock, Rainier and Toledo all saw state champions.

Here is a round-up of highlights and photos from each of those schools in alphabetical order. Photos are placed in a gallery organized by school.

Adna (2B)

Adna's Jordan Stout finished third-place in the 800m in 2:00.77, and Reagan Naillon earned a sixth-place finish in the 400m dash with a time of 1:03.60.The girls 4x100-meter relay also finished fifth in 53.75 with a team of Sophie Hagseth, Megan Price, Lydia Tobin and Naillon. Lillian Boyd Jr. placed seventh in the 2B girls discus with a throw of 104 feet, 3 inches.

Mossyrock (1B)

In 1B, Mossyrock had a strong close to the season with Matt Cooper taking home a gold medal after earning the title for a 2:00.73 dash in the 800m. His teammate Christian Paz-Tapia took fourth in that same race with 2:04.24.

In the field, Marshall Brockway placed second in the boys 1B shot put with a 44 foot, 11 inch throw and Caelyn Marshall finished third in the javelin with a 116 foot, 6 inch toss.

Cooper and Paz-Tapia also earned medals for their relay performance, finishing fourth place with a time of 3:41.63 in the 4x400 alongside Angel Velasco and Lucas Cooper.

Hugo Wedam finished seventh in the 3200m in 10:42.941, taking a photo finish over teammate Miguel Gomez, who finished eighth in 10:42.946.

The Vikings’ girls 4x200-meter relay team of Caelyn Marshall, Leah Contreras, Renzy Marshall and Saydi Mendoza finished sixth in 1:53.86, and that same group finished sixth in the 4x100 in 53.30 later that Saturday.

Morton-White Pass (2B)

Morton-White Pass’ Ayricka Hughes finished eighth in the 3200-meter run in 14:23.09, and Tony Belgiorno placed again on the final day with a seventh-place finish in the 400-meter dash in 53.04.

Morton-White Pass put two boys in the top four of the long jump, with Tony Belgiorno finishing second at 20 feet, 9.5 inches, and Max Lowe finishing fourth at 20 feet, 0.25 inches.

Napavine (2B)

Napavine’s Max O’Neill capped a strong year with a pair of second-place finishes in the 100-meter dash and 200m, including a dramatic finish in the former. The senior lost the state title by three thousandths of a second, running the 100m in 11.234. He came back to also finish second in the 200m in 22.54.

On the girls side, the Tigers’ Keira O’Neill finished third in the high jump with a 5 foot clearance and fifth in the triple jump (33 feet, 10.25 inches).

Morgan Hamilton finished as state runner-up in the 400-meter dash in 1:00.68, fourth in the long jump at 16 feet, 5.25 inches, and both Hamilton and O’Neill — along with Emily Kang and Jessie McCoy — helped the girls 4x100-meter relay finish sixth in 54.42.

Napavine’s Colin Shields, who just missed out on the podium in the javelin, made it in the shot put, taking fifth at 45 feet, 0.75 inches.

Onalaska (2B)

Onalaska’s Kelsi Haas earned a silver medal for pole vault while Ony senior Brooklyn Sandridge capped her season with a third-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles in 48.37.

Sandridge also earned an eighth-place finish in the 2B girls discus (102 feet, 1 inch).

For the boys, the 4x400 team of Riley Carter, Taden Miller, Isaac Fitch and Ben Russon finished eighth with a time of 3:40.27.

Carter also placed fifth in the boys 300-meter hurdles in 42.31 while Melissa Reiman finished fifth in the girls 800m in 2:29.84. Russon finished fifth in the boys 800m in 2:02.58, and Justice Miller took eighth in the boys discus (129 feet, 1 inch).

Pe Ell (1B)

Pe Ell put out three strong performances in hurdle events.

Carter Phelps took second in both the 110m hurdles in 16.24 and the 300-meter hurdles in 42.10, while Calan McCarty finished eighth in the 110m hurdles in 17.44

The Trojans’ Charlie Carper finished third in the 100m hurdles in 16.79 and sixth in the 300m hurdles in 52.48 to bring home more hardware from Yakima.

Rainier (2B)

Rainier picked up a state championship on Friday and Saturday with Ella Marvin earning gold in the 2B girls pole vault, clearing 9 feet, 9 inches and Acacia Murphy in the high jump with a 5 foot, 2 inch clearance, and then finishing sixth in the 100-meter dash in 13.27.

The height is an improvement of over 2 feet from last year for Marvin, who finished 10th at the 2022 championships with a height of 7 feet, 6 inches.

Matthew Kenney also got to the podium, taking seventh in the 2B boys shot put (44 feet, 0.5 inches). Also on the field, James Meldrum competed in the pole vault finals.

Tenino (1A)

In the 1A ranks, Trinity Tafoya got Tenino on the podium, taking sixth in the shot put at 36 feet, 9.5 inches.

Andres Zamudio also competed in shot put finals, throwing at 43 feet and 7 inches.

Toledo (2B)

For the second year in a row, the Toledo boys 4x400 team ended the 2B track season with a state title, as Trevin Gale, Jordan Mckenzie, John Rose, and Conner Olmstead beat the field by nearly two seconds with a time of 3:29.08.

The Riverhawks sat in a tight third place after the first leg, but by the time Mckenzie gave the baton to Rose, they were in front of the pack. When Rose gave it to Olmstead, the lead over Chewelah was half a second, and as Olmstead took one last lap in his high school career, that gap broadened.

It was a high note to end the meet on, after Toledo opened the weekend with a scare when Zack Smith, another senior, took a hard fall in the hurdles and had to be taken off with a broken ankle.

“It’s been a pretty emotional last couple of days,” Olmstead said. “It’s always emotional when you’re a senior, but on the first day one of your best friends breaks his ankle… We had to come out here and do it for him. A lot of this is for Zack.”

Mckenzie also finished third in the 400m in 51.18, and then sixth in the 200m in 23.37. Treyton Marty took home more hardware, taking seventh in the 3200m in 10:00.09.

On Friday, Olmstead earned an individual championship in the 2B high jump, winning by clearing 6 feet, 3 inches to beat out Reardan’s Richard Alsept.

Toutle Lake (2B)

Toutle Lake’s Laynie Brandhorst earned a silver medal for her 125 foot 2 inch javelin throw. In the girls 800m relay, Ella Bartel, Lainey Dean, Avery Ruelas and Kendal Dean ran to fourth place with a time of 1:52.59.

Brandhorst was joined by Grace Hadaller for competition in state 2B shot put.

Winlock (2B)

Winlock had a pair of final day placers, with Payton Sickles taking seventh in the 100m in 11.51, and Victoria Sancho finishing sixth in the 200-meter finals in 27.04.

Chase Trodahl competed in the finals for the 2B boys 3200 meter run in Yakima on Saturday, May 27.

Willapa Valley (1B)

Willapa Valley earned several state championships, with Lauryn McGough taking home gold for javelin throwing (134 feet and 9 inches) and pole vault with a height of 12 feet and 3 inches, setting a new record for 1B girls.

Brooklyn Patrick heads home from Yakima with a heavy burden — considering the weight of all her medals. She earned a state championship in the girls 1B 100m dash with a time of 13.30 seconds, a silver medal in the 100m hurdles and an eighth place medal for the 300m hurdles.

Patrick and McGough also earned a fourth place medal with her relay team, joined by Julianna Lynch and Emily Wilson in the 1B girls 400m relay with a time of 52.52.
