TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO-WAWV) — The Terre Haute City Council tabled an ordinance Thursday that applies new rules to large events.

The ordinance increases permit fees and insurance requirements for those hosting an event. It also requires security and a local point of contact.

Terre Haute Mayor Brandon Sakbun requested the council table the new ordinance to allow the city to review the exemptions.

Currently, they include university organizations that have 50 or more members, but the mayor believes the language needs to be more inclusive.

We withdrew it to look into exemptions because we weren’t looking at exemptions previously. The way the exemptions are currently worded kind of limit some of our student organizations that don’t have 50 members in a group. Rose-Hulman is about to have a freshman class of 615 students, how many of their organizations have 50 people, right. Even some of our Indiana State organizations or St. Mary’s of the Woods College organizations.

Also at the city council meeting, an amendment was approved to allow the Terre Haute Fire Department to look at improving radio communication.

It will allow the department to test and install new technology on commercial structures, with more than 5,000 square feet.

The east side of Terre Haute developing, that is a great thing for our community. A consequence to that is there is more density where sometimes our radios do not function correctly inside of buildings, so we looked at ways to solve that.

Scott Dalton – Battalion Chief THPD

The fire department says this will not affect residential buildings or homes, but anyone can contact the department about installing the new technology.

The next city council meeting is scheduled for September 5th.
