LAURENS COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – A student has been charged in connection with a threat made against Laurens Middle School on Monday.

According to Laurens Police Department, a 12-year-old minor has been charged with “student threats” following a social media post which threatened Laurens Middle School.

The threat was reported to Laurens Police on Monday, and investigators worked with Laurens County School District 55 to investigate.

The school district said on Facebook the threats were not made at school and there was never a threat made in the building and no weapons were found on the student or at the Laurens Middle School campus.

“We want to assure you that this matter has been handled with the utmost urgency and diligence. Everyone’s safety is our top priority, and we are thankful for the collaboration between the school district and our police department,” the district said.

The treat at Laurens Middle School is the second one made to a Laurens District 55 school this week. On Sunday, the district said it was notified of a threat made on social media by a student at Gray Court-Owings School.

The threat was also found not to be credible and the district said it would take appropriate disciplinary actions in both instances.

Schools across the Upstate and in Georgia have multiple reports of threats in the days following the Appalachee high School shooting last Wednesday, which left four dead and multiple others injured.

A 14-year-old has also been arrested in connection with a threat made toward a Georgia school in Elbert County and three students were arrested on Friday in connection with threats made at two schools in Hart County.

On Monday, a Greer Middle School student was arrested in connection with threats towards Greer high School and Easley Police said it has investigated threats made against a local school as well.

A threat was also made over the weekend toward a school in Abbeville County , which was found to not be credible.

“We ask that you have conversations with your children regarding the appropriate use of technology, monitor their social media accounts, and remind them not to post inappropriate messages that may intend to harm others or deter students from coming to school. We take these matters seriously to ensure the safety and security of our students and staff,” said District 55.

So is this an uptick in threats or an uptick in law enforcement doing something about it? One way or the other, this is definitely a response to the recent school shootings.
