TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The tropics are mostly quiet as we near what’s historically known as “peak” hurricane season.

This afternoon on Tracking the Tropics, our team explains what’s behind the lack of activity, and will have the latest on three tropical waves we’re keeping an eye on in the Atlantic.

A wave located over the eastern Caribbean could become a tropical depression this weekend as it moves northwestward toward the Gulf, where conditions become more favorable for development, according to the National Hurricane Center.

A second tropical wave off the coast of Africa could bring heavy rain and winds to portions of Cabo Verde Islands as it moves slowly to the northwest over the next few days.

The NHC says both disturbances have a 30% chance of developing within the next seven days, but are unlikely to form in the short term. Forecasters previously put them at a 40% chance of development.

Forecasters began monitoring a third wave in the central Atlantic on Tuesday morning. Some slow development is possible, but it is expected to encounter unfavorable conditions later this week.

It has a 10% chance of development in the next seven days.
