Riesel rips Wortham 11-0 in District 16-2A play

The Wortham baseball team was shut out by Riesel, 11-0, in a District 162A game at Wortham on Friday, April 12. The game was stopped after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Riesel scored two runs in each of the first and fourth innings and erupted for seven in the third inning.

Wortham’s only hit was a leadoff single by Cash Perez in the fourth inning. But he was left on base after two strikeouts and a groundout.

Jon Ross Black started and took the loss for Wortham, which committed seven errors. He pitched 3 1/3 innings and allowed seven hits and 11 runs, of which only three were earned. He walked six and struck out four.

Shane Guthrie and Lance Jones combined to pitch 1 1/3 innings of hitless relief for the Bulldogs.

Wortham was scheduled to host Hubbard on Tuesday. The Bulldogs will conclude their regular season Friday, April 19, with a 4:30 p.m. contest at Hubbard.

Double-digit inning propels Hubbard past Lady Bulldogs

The Wortham softball team lost to Hubbard, 162, in a District 16-2A game at Hubbard on Friday, April 12. The game was stopped after four and a half innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Hubbard erupted for 11 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to put the game away. They had scored one in the first and two in each of the second and third innings.

Wortham put up single tallies in the first and fourth innings.

Katelynn Spain and Megan Cryer each had a double and RBI for the Lady Bulldogs. Justice Atkins was 2-for-2 and scored a run. Dakota Butler also was 2-for-2.

Hubbard had 13 hits and took advantage of six Wortham errors.

Spain pitched three innings for Wortham and took the loss. She allowed 11 hits and 10 runs, of which five were earned. She struck out one and did not walk a batter.

Cryer pitched one inning and surrendered two hits and six runs, of which three were earned. She walked one and struck out one.

Wortham was scheduled to play at Frost on Tuesday. The Lady Bulldogs will wrap up their regular season Friday, April 19, when they host Italy at 4:30 p.m.
