Lady Bulldogs smash Coolidge, Avalon in run-rule victories

The Wortham softball team scored a pair of big victories in District 16-2A action last week.

The Lady Bulldogs routed Avalon, 18-2, on Friday, April 5, after shutting out Coolidge, 19-0, on Tuesday, April 2.

The win at Avalon on Friday was stopped after three innings due to the 15-run mercy rule.

Wortham scored six runs in the first inning, eight in the second and four in the third. Avalon managed single runs in the first and third innings.

Katelynn Spain and Megan Cryer combined on a no-hitter. Each allowed an unearned run. Spain pitched two innings and walked one and struck out two. Cryer did not strike out or walk a batter in her one inning of work.

Cryer had three hits, including a double, knocked in three runs and scored one run. Brooke Norcross also had two hits, scored three runs and drove in three runs.

Spain and Madison Newhouse each had a hit, drove in three runs and scored two runs. JusticeAtkins scored two runs. Haylee Shivers had a hit, knocked in two runs and scored one run.

Lady Bulldogs 19, Coolidge 0

Wortham scored five runs in the first inning and 14 in the second inning in a game that was stopped after two and a half innings due to the 15-run mercy rule.

Cryer pitched a three-inning complete game, allowed one hit and struck out eight.

On offense, Cryer had two hits, including a double, drove in four runs and scored one run.

Shivers was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and three runs batted in. Dakota Butler was 2-for-2 and scored three runs.

Spain and Atkins scored three runs each. Johanna Contreras was 2-for-2 with two runs batted in and one run scored. Norcross had a hit, drove in two runs and scored one.

Wortham was scheduled to play Dawson on Tuesday. The Lady Bulldogs will return to action Friday when they travel to Hubbard for a 4:30 p.m. game.
