Bulldogs sweep 2 from Dawson

The Wortham baseball team swept two games from Dawson last week and improved its District 16-2A record to 5-3.

The Bulldogs romped to an 11 -1 win in Wortham on Tuesday, April 2, and notched a 6-4 decision at Dawson on Friday, April 5.

Wortham scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 6-2 lead and held off a Dawson rally in the bottom of the seventh.

Wortham took an early lead with one run in the top of the first. The Bulldogs added two in the top of the fifth, but Dawson matched that pair in the home half of the sixth inning to pull within 3-2.

Jon Ross Black was the starting pitcher for Wortham and earned the victory. The junior left-hander went 6 1/3 innings and allowed just one hit and three runs, of which two were earned. He walked seven and struck out seven.

Shane Guthrie came on to get the final two outs in the seventh inning. He gave up two hits and one earned run, walked one and fanned one.

On offense, Black had a hit and scored three runs. Guthrie had two hits and scored two runs. Anthony Fortoul had a pair of hits and knocked in two runs.

Lance Jones had two RBI. Rylan Langley had a double and RBI.

Cash Perez fired a one-hitter and struck out 14 to gain the victory for Wortham.

Dawson drew first blood with a run in the top of the second inning. Wortham answered with four runs in the home half of the frame.

The Bulldogs scored two runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings and put the game away with three in the bottom of the sixth. The contest was stopped with two outs due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Black had two hits, scored three runs and drove in one. Trynen Cawthorn scored three runs and Raymond Fortoul scored two runs. Perez had a double, scored one run and knocked in one.

Wortham was scheduled to play at Riesel on Tuesday. The Bulldogs will return to action Friday, April 12, when they host Riesel at 4:30 p.m.
