State police say a person found dead at the scene of a single-vehicle crash Thursday morning on the Massachusetts Turnpike in Russell was a Worcester man who had suffered self-inflicted injuries.

At 6:20 a.m. Thursday, state troopers responded to a report of a Hyundai Sonata striking a guardrail and going off the westbound side of the turnpike in Russell, just west of Springfield.

The driver was the sole person in the car, according to state police. Evidence pointed to the driver suffering fatal self-inflicted injuries, according to state police.

The sequence of events, including when the self-inflicted injuries occurred, are under investigation.
