WORCESTER, Mass. - Worcester city council members voted unanimously Tuesday to grant a part of Salisbury Street an honorary name.

The co-name is to honor Albanian feudal lord and military commander Gjergj Kastrioti, commonly known as Skanderbeg, who led a rebellion against the Ottoman Empire in what is Albania today.

St. Mary's Albanian Orthodox Church said co-naming Salisbury Street is the start of recognizing the Albanian heritage in Worcester. They said it will also honor the more than 20,000 Albanians who live in the city.

"It has a huge significance and should be an honor for the city of Worcester, not just for the Albanians, to have this name up," said Frank Zdruli, of the group Sons of St. Mary's.

"Now, whether you go to the supermarket or the coffee shop or the mechanic, you can almost always here someone speaking Albanian," said Father Mark Doku. "It's been an explosive growth in this community."

The honorary name does not change the official name of Salisbury Street or any street signs. The proposal was sent to a city council subcommittee to finalize a plan for implementation.
