3 CMS board members who voted to keep Hill get key role in next superintendent pick
Three Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board members who voted against firing former Superintendent Crystal Hill will now help lead the search for her replacement. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education announced Wednesday that Anna London, Cynthia Stone, Monty Witherspoon and board Chair Gregory “Dee” Rankin will serve on its Superintendent Search Ad Hoc Committee. London will chair the four-member group. London, Stone and Witherspoon were part of the 5-4 minority that opposed terminating Hill’s contract for convenience on Sept. 22. Rankin voted with the majority to fire her. That gives three board members who questioned the timing or wisdom of Hill’s removal a prominent role in shaping the search for CMS’ next superintendent. The vote came about six weeks after the board reinstated Hill following a lengthy outside investigation that found no evidence of wrongdoing on Hill’s part. The district now faces multiple ongoing probes into alleged financial irregularities, and the departure of several senior administrators . Stone said during the Sept. 22 meeting that the district was already dealing with multiple unresolved problems , including the investigations. Against that backdrop, she said it was the “wrong time to change horses” and warned that the board was adding to its own difficulties. Stone
