PHS loses heartbreaker against Mt. Whitney
VISALIA — East Yosemite League play opened up Friday night from the Mineral King Bowl in Visalia as the Porterville High football team was looking to bounce back from its first loss of the year last week when it fell to Exeter 17-12. Unfortunately for PHS it lost another nail biter, this time at the hands of Mt. Whitney 35-28. Things didn’t start well for the Panthers as after the Pioneers won the toss and deferred they hit PHS with a pooch kick down the left side PHS let drop and it was recovered by Whitney at the PHS 30 yard line.

Monache's Noel Ceballos was stuffed on fourth and two at the Golden West 13 to preserve the Trail Blazers' 23-19 lead and Golden West went onto beat the Marauders by that final score on Friday night at Jamison Stadium. SHASTA FALLS TO SEQUOIAS 40-37 IN OT
REDDING, Calif. – Shasta College's football team lost 40-37 in overtime at home to College of the Sequoias Saturday at Memorial Stadium. Shasta's 29-yard field goal from Cole Crossen was the only score in the fourth quarter to tie it at 34 midway through the period. In extra time, Shasta reached the Sequoias 12 but had to settle for a 32-yard field goal to go up three. But the Giants' first overtime play resulted in a 25-yard touchdown run from wide receiver Jaylen Laudermilk to hand the Knights the home loss.
Freshmen Burros win sixth straight league match
The Burroughs freshmen volleyball squad defeated Sultana 25-17, 28-26 to claim its sixth straight win in Mojave River League. Alexa Santiago had 14 points during her serve with 10 aces. She also had four digs and nine assists. Zoe Thebom had five points during her serve with three aces. She had three serve receptions and five digs. Makenna Dyer had three kills, four serve receptions and 10 digs in the road win.
Burroughs cross country takes the top spot at first MRL Cluster meet
On Thursday, September 21, the Burroughs Cross Country team ran at the MRL Cluster meet in Sultana. This was the team’s first league meet of the season. Burroughs athletes ran strong at the meet, with the JV Boys, Varsity Boys, and Varsity Girls teams coming in first place overall. The JV Girls team had enough girls to place for the first time since 2019, and came in second place.

Girls’ varsity field hockey experiences unfortunate loss to SFU
On Monday, Sept. 18, the girls’ varsity field hockey team had an unfortunate loss to the San Francisco University (SFU) Devils, resulting in a 0-1 score. The first two quarters were very back-and-forth between Redwood and SFU, with both teams holding up strong defense. Goalkeeper and senior Caroline Muller had a couple of impressive saves, but for the most part the Giants’ defensive line was tough for the Devils to pass through. Senior Sammy Haan skillfully moved the game from in front of the Giants’ goal to the other side of the field. Approaching halftime, the game was tied 0-0.
