Prep roundup: Woodburn softball falls to South Albany

Woodburn softball fell behind early and ultimately lost 17-2 against South Albany on Friday, April 19, at Woodburn High School.

South Albany rattled off nine runs on seven hits in the first inning. The Bulldogs responded with two runs of their own, with junior Hailey Helzer smacking an RBI-double to center field to score teammates Areli Torres Alvarado and Miranda Trentzsch.

Unfortunately, South Albany piled on another seven runs in the second frame and the Bulldogs couldn't respond, failing to register another run the rest of the game, ultimately losing after three innings.

Helzer led the Bulldogs with one hit and two RBIs. Junior Ichika Suita added one hit. Genevieve Trentzsch started in the circle for Woodburn, surrendering 10 earned runs on 14 hits over two innings, striking out one. Miranda Trentzsch pitched an inning in relief, allowing one run on two hits.

Woodburn (2-13, 2-5 MWC) looks to bounce back against Lebanon (10-4, 5-1 MWC) on Monday, April 22, at home.

Newberg baseball

The Tigers lost their ninth consecutive game on Friday afternoon, losing to Forest Grove 10-7 at home.

Newberg totaled nine hits and five RBIs. Senior Kevin Stone led the way with two hits and two RBIs, while Cole Stone added one hit and two RBIs. Lucas Vaughn contributed two hits and Zadek Bowlby finished with one hit and one RBI.

Trevor Johnson started on the mound for the Tigers, surrendering three runs on two hits over three innings, striking out one and walking three. Judah Campos pitched two innings in relief, allowing four runs on three hits, striking out zero and walking one.

The Tigers (2-13, 0-8 Pacific) will hit the road and begin their three-game series against McMinnville on Monday, April 22.

Newberg softball

Newberg struggled at the plate on Friday, dropping its first Pacific Conference matchup of the season against Forest Grove 13-3 on the road.

Although a single from senior Brooklyn Mills on an 0-2 count secured the first run of the game in the first inning, Forest Grove responded with five runs in the bottom of the frame to take a commanding lead they never relinquished. Mills led the Tigers with two hits and one RBI, while sophomore Delainy Willard finished with one hit and senior Baylee Nix added two hits and one RBI.

Nix opened the bout in the circle for Newberg, surrendering six runs on six hits over two innings, walking three. Junior McKenna Proffitt pitched three and two-thirds innings in relief, allowing seven runs on nine hits, striking out one and walking three.

The Tigers (7-9, 2-1 Pacific) look to bounce back on Tuesday, April 23, against No. 4 Sherwood (15-2, 3-0) at home.

St. Paul baseball

St. Paul pushed its winning streak to six games on Friday, besting Vernonia/Jewell in a double-header at home.

The two victories, which ended in 14-4 and 7-6, also completed a series sweep for the Buckaroos. St. Paul piled up 13 hits and 11 RBIs in game one, ending it after five innings. Clay Smith recorded three hits and four RBIs to lead the Buckaroos, while Brett Knutson, Ralph Pohlschneider and Sullivan Grott each added two hits and one RBI. Elijah Bonham finished with one hit and three RBIs.

Knutson opened game one on the mound for St. Paul, surrendering two runs on two hits over two innings, striking out three and walking two. Grady Wolf threw three innings in relief, allowing two runs on one hit, striking out five and walking zero.

The Buckaroos slowed down a bit in the second game of the afternoon, totaling seven hits and three RBIs. Grott and Knuston recorded two hits each to lead St. Paul. Pohlschneider added one hit and one RBI as Diego Medina recorded a team-high two RBIs.

Smith started on the bump in the game two, allowing four runs on one hit over four and one-third innings, striking out five and walking three. Grott, meanwhile, threw just over two frames for the Buckaroos in relief, allowing two runs on two hits, striking out six and walking four.

No. 6 St. Paul (11-3, 6-3 SD1) opens its three-game series against No. 13 Clatskanie (11-1, 8-1 SD1) on Tuesday, April 23, on the road.

St. Paul softball

St. Paul pushed its winning streak to eight games on Friday, besting Vernonia/Jewell 18-3 and 24-9 in a double-header at home.

Similar to the baseball team, the Buckaroos' two victories secured a series sweep. The team recorded a total of 20 hits, 19 base on balls and 19 RBIs on the day. The first bout was decided in three innings, with Josey Edwards recording a whopping six RBIs on three hits to lead St. Paul. Amelia Cavazos contributed one hit and two RBIs while Isla Haven and Payton Whitlock each had two hits.

Cavazos was in the circle in the first game, allowing three runs on three hits over three innings, striking out four and walking one.

Game two ended after just four innings. Haven led the team with three hits and one RBIs while Edwards recorded one hit and three RBIs. Gracie Koch secured one hit and one RBI. Cavazos remained in the circle for one inning, allowing one but zero hits, striking out one and walking four. Brooke Schindler pitched three innings in relief, surrendering eight runs on seven hits, striking out four and walking two.

No. 10 St. Paul (13-1, 8-1 SD1) opens its three-game series against No. 8 Clatskanie (8-4, 7-2 SD1) on Tuesday, April 23, on the road.

Gervais softball

The Cougars won their fourth consecutive game on Friday, needing just five innings to dispose of Regis 13-3 at home.

Ekatirina Secrist drove in four runs on two hits to lead Gervais, while junior Addy McCargar added two hits and one RBI. Marina Bodunov, Camryn Rutledge and Citlali Munoz each added a hit and two RBIs and Exy Wurdinger contributed one hit and one RBI.

McCargar was dealing in the circle for the Cougars, surrendering three runs on five hits over five innings, striking out 10 and walking zero.

Gervais (9-8, 4-2 SD3) looks to continue its winning ways on the road against Central Linn (3-11, 2-3 SD3) on Friday, April 26.

Canby baseball

Canby completed its season sweep of Hillsboro with ease on Friday, steamrolling past the Spartans 10-0 on the road.

The game was over after five innings, as the Cougars totaled 11 hits and scored in every inning but the opening frame. Quinton Esmay led Canby with three hits and one RBI. Hayden Davis recorded a game-high three RBIs on two hits while Joe Scott and Jack Brauckmiller each added one hit and one RBI.

Brauckmiller was on the mound, allowing just two hits over five innings, striking out seven of the 16 batters he faced.

No. 3 Canby (12-3, 5-1 NWOC) opens its three-game series against No. 14 Hood River Valley (6-9, 4-2 NWOC) on Tuesday, April 23, on the road.

Canby softball

The Cougars bounced back nicely from their shutout loss earlier this week, outlasting La Salle Prep 6-5 on Friday and splitting their two-game road trip.

Summer St John led Canby with three hits while Allison Hayzlett finished with two hits. Abigail Troutman and Madison Bigej each added one hit and one RBI. Hayzlett was in the circle, surrendering five runs on nine hits through seven innings, striking out 11 and walking one.

No. 11 Canby (7-8, 3-2 NWOC) will look to return to .500 for the first time since March 19 against No. 12 Hood River Valley (11-6, 3-1 NWOC) on Wednesday, April 24, at home.

Kennedy baseball vs Country Christian/North Clackamas Christian

The Cougars managed to avoid a season sweep against the Trojans and handed them their first league loss since May 11, 2022, utilizing a five-run opening inning to ultimately win 9-5 on Friday on the road.

Country Christian/North Clackamas Christian collected 10 hits and six RBIs. The bottom of the lineup bolstered the Cougars' efforts, as Ethan Hiebenthal, Kyle Syphard and Tranden Stricker combined for five of the team's total hits, with Stricker recording a game-high three RBIs.

Tyson Smith started on the mound for the Cougars, allowing four runs on four hits over four and two-third innings, striking out seven and walking nine. Caleb Norton and Jesse Hernandez provided some throws in relief, combining for two strikeouts.

Kennedy, meanwhile, totaled five hits and four RBIs. Colby Rich posted one hit and two RBIs to lead the Trojans while Henry Beyer recorded a team-high two RBIs.

Kody Graves opened on the mound for Kennedy, allowing six runs on four hits over one inning, striking out zero and walking one. Jake Beyer, meanwhile, surrendered three runs on five hits over five innings, striking out three and walking one. Dom Beyer provided an inning in relief, allowing just one hit and striking out three.

The Cougars (9-7, 4-2 SD2) will open their three-game series against Colton (0-10, 0-6 SD2) on Monday, April 22, on the road. The No. 10 Trojans (13-2, 5-1 SD2), meanwhile, look to bounce back in their three-game series against Western Christian (6-6, 3-3 SD2), starting on Monday, April 22, on the road.

Kennedy softball vs Country Christian/North Clackamas Christian

The Cougars finished with 20 hits and 15 RBIs, drubbing Kennedy 19-6 in six innings on the road and clinching the season series.

Millie Hankland collected four hits and one RBI while Bekah Neely recorded three hits and three RBIs. Emma Seubert added three hits and two RBIs, with Kee Kee Dahlgren and Cara Mulhern contributing two hits and three RBIs each.

Dahlgren was in the circle for the Cougars, allowing six runs on eight hits over six innings, striking out six and walking four.

Kennedy, meanwhile, managed eight hits and four RBIs. Grace Traeger and Brianna Traeger each had three hits to lead the Trojans, while Madelyn Schaecher and Annaliese Schacher each recorded one hit and two RBIs.

Grace Traeger started in the circle for Kennedy, surrendering 14 runs on 14 hits over four innings, striking out five and walking three. Schacher provided two innings in relief, allowing four runs on five hits, striking out two and walking none.

The Cougars (6-7, 2-4 SD2) will open their three-game series against Colton (3-9, 1-4 SD2) on Monday, April 22, on the road. The Trojans (3-8, 3-3 SD2), meanwhile, look to bounce back in their three-game series against Western Christian (0-10, 0-6 SD2), starting on Monday, April 22, on the road.
