LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Meridian Township Police warn residents of an email scam hitting inboxes.

Officials said in a Facebook post on Tuesday it was fielding reports of emails from “Meridian/Delhi/Ingham County.” The emails demand bitcoin payments or a video of them will be shared on social media. Included in the emails are photos of the target’s home taken from Google Earth.

This report comes as CBS News reported on a national trend of these scam emails appearing across the country.

“Do not scan the QR code contained in the email or reply to the email. Never provide personal or financial information without proper security protocols,” Meridian Township Police Department officials warned on Facebook.

The Federal Trade Commission has a website on how to identify scam emails.
