NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Authorities responded to a shooting near Percy Priest Lake that left one teen critically injured on Monday night.

The Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) responded to a call outside the Mapco on Smith Springs Road just after 7 p.m. There, they discovered a 17-year-old boy who had been shot, resulting in serious injuries.

Officers told News 2 their initial investigation found the 17-year-old tried to rob a person who was walking out of the Mapco store. The 20-year-old robbery victim allegedly went back to their car and pulled out a firearm before shooting the 17-year-old three times in the back.

The teen was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC). His condition is not known at this time.

Following the shooting, the 20-year-old’s mother reportedly contacted a member of the police department who has been closely involved in outreach to the Hispanic community to report what her son told her about the shooting.

Number of teen homicide victims in Nashville continues to rise

Detectives said they found the rifle that had been used in the shooting at the 20-year-old’s home. During an interview, the 20-year-old told authorities he had shot the teen “with the perception that the teen was going for [a] pistol.”

Officials said a nine-millimeter semi-automatic pistol was found in the 17-year-old’s clothing. Investigators have not yet had the opportunity to interview the teen due to his medical condition.

As of Tuesday, no charges had been filed against the 20-year-old. MNPD is still investigating, and the case will be turned over to the District Attorney’s Office in the near future. There is no further information at this time.
