“It’s disturbing”: Local political figures react to apparent assassination attempt of Former President

MOBILE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — Former President Donald Trump has been declared safe and unharmed after an apparent assassination attempt in Florida Sunday afternoon.

Officials say Trump was golfing at the Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach when Secret Service agents spotted a suspect with a gun pointed in his direction.

This comes two months after Trump was shot during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania while speaking in front of thousands.

Political leaders in Mobile tell News 5 that they are disappointed, and that violence is never the answer.

“We have allowed political discourse in this country to become so raw that people, or at least some people think that they can go to true extremes to express themselves,” Former Congressman Bradley Byrne said.

Byrne expressed that the repetitive assassination attempts are sickening, and that voters’ beliefs have become too extreme.

“You and I could disagree on policy. Disagree on politics and still treat one another with stability, we’ve got to get back to that,” Byrne said.

The Mobile County Democratic Party says that they are thankful that the former President is safe but agrees that it is up to voters to tone down the violence.

“It’s disturbing. Violence is never the answer,” Mobile County Democratic Party Chairman, Ben Harris said. “We all can do our part in toning down the rhetoric and doing our part to make sure that our discourse is civil.”

The presidential election is less than two months away.
