MOBILE, Ala. ( WKRG ) — Francine is now a hurricane as it heads closer and closer to the Louisiana shoreline.
Mobile is expected to see impacts such as rain, rough surf, storm surge/coastal flooding, gusty winds and a tornado threat.
Because of that, some school systems are canceling classes or changing schedules for Wednesday, Sept. 11.
News 5 is tracking school schedule changes in response to the weather forecast. We will update this list as we learn more. (Check back for updates!)
Baldwin County Public Schools
Baldwin County Public Schools will open as normal on Wednesday but after-school activities have been canceled. The administration said they would decide tomorrow whether or not classes would take place Thursday.
Coastal Alabama Community College
CACC has canceled classes starting at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Cottage Hill Christian Academy
“After thorough consideration, school will operate on a regular schedule tomorrow, Wednesday, September 11, 2024,” a CHCA Facebook post said.
“Due to the current forecasted possibility of inclement weather in the evening, all after-school activities are canceled, and the campus will close at 3:30 PM.
“Please note that there will be no after-school care, and the EEC will also close at 3:30 PM.”
Faith Academy
“At this time, we are having a normal school day tomorrow, Wednesday, September 11; however, all afterschool activities have been canceled,” a Faith Academy Facebook post said.
George County School District
“Due to the immediate threat of inclement weather in our area, the George County School District has made the decision to close all schools for students and staff on Wednesday, September 11, 2024,” a GCSD news release stated. “Also, all athletic events and activities are cancelled on Wednesday, September 11, 2024.
“Thursday, September 12 will be a delay start day. Bus routes will begin two hours later than normal. Students and staff will report to school two hours later than regularly scheduled. Staff should contact their immediate supervisor with any questions.”
Greene County, Miss. Public Schools
Greene County schools will be closing at 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday.
“All schools will release around 12:45 p.m. Again, all schools will release at 12:45 p.m. tomorrow. Any decision regarding changes to Thursday’s schedule will be made tomorrow afternoon,” read a Greene County release.
Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College
MGCCC administration announced that the school will be closed on Wednesday.
“All face-to-face classes are canceled. All campus facilities will remain closed except for the cafeteria and residence halls on the Perkinston Campus,” read a Facebook post . “We urge everyone to stay safe and monitor local weather updates. Please follow our official communication channels for further updates.”
Mobile & Baldwin County Catholic Schools
Mobile and Baldwin County Catholic Schools will be closed on Wednesday.
Mobile Christian School
“After discussing it with our staff and other weather professionals, the current plan is to have a normal school day tomorrow, Wednesday, September 11, 2024,” a Facebook post said.
“However, due to the severe weather anticipated tomorrow afternoon, our after-school activities, including after-school care, will be canceled.”
Mobile County Private Schools
Faith Academy, Mobile Christian and Cottage Hill Christian Academy will have classes as normal on Wednesday but after-school activity has been canceled.
Mobile County Public Schools
Mobile County Public Schools will be open tomorrow, Sept. 11; however, after-school activity has been canceled.
“We will continue monitoring the weather throughout the day tomorrow to inform decisions as it relates to Thursday,” read a system Facebook post .
Saraland City Schools
Saraland schools will have class as normal on Wednesday with no after-school activities.
Okaloosa County Schools
“At this time, schools are expected to remain open,” an Okaloosa County Schools spokesperson said. “We will continue to work closely with the county’s emergency operations center and provide updates as needed.
Pascagoula-Gautier, Miss. School District
All Pascagoula-Gautier schools will be closed on Wednesday. All extracurricular activities are also canceled.
“The district is closely monitoring the possible impacts of Tropical Storm Francine. A decision will be made by 6 p.m. tomorrow to determine if schools will open Thursday. Please keep your family safe and closely monitor the tropical storm’s track as it gets closer to the Gulf Coast. Expect any necessary updates through text, our website or the district Facebook page,” read a district news release.
UMS-Wright
“While some schools and daycares have decided to close tomorrow, we currently plan to remain open,” a UMS-Wright Facebook post said. “However, all after-school activities and extended care for Wednesday, September 11 are canceled (Varsity athletic practices remain TBD).”
