    Carver Park to host annual Emancipation Saturday event this weekend

    JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) – The community is invited to Johnson City’s annual Emancipation Saturday event at Carver Park from 12 to 9 p.m. this weekend.

    The event will educate about local community organizations, including LEAD , the Washington County Democratic Party (WCDP) , UMOJA Johnson City and others, according to a social media post by the event .

    “And so, we have to tell and we have to clearly understand the American narrative,” said Adam Dickson, supervisor of the Langston Center. “So, when we think about Juneteenth, Emancipation Day, freedom from slavery, it’s a part of the American narrative. To me, that’s the impact of August the eighth.”

    Emancipation Saturday will feature live music performances by The Free Flow Band, Africa Live, Jeanine Fuller and the True Funk Souldiers, and Lynnae Moon and the Rhythm Brewers.

    Local food and merchandise vendors, a splash pad and other children’s activities will be at the event. The city will serve free hotdogs for children from 12 to 3 p.m.

    Event organizers encourage attendees to bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on.
