Mozel Sanders Foundation needs volunteers to help feed thousands on Thanksgiving Day

INDIANAPOLIS — The Mozel Sanders Foundation is back again serving Thanksgiving meals for those in need.

Sanders, an East St. Louis, Illinois, native, died in 1988 at age 64. In 1959, Sanders became pastor of the Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church on Indianapolis’ west side and served there until his death.

His impact and legacy live on through the Mozel Sanders Foundation; this year, they say they are going to feed over 10,000 people again during their annual Thanksgiving meal giveaway.

Stephanie Sanders, chief operating officer of the foundation, says they are looking for volunteers as the time inches closer.

“Around 750 at the minimum, because that’s what we have now. But Thanksgiving isn’t here yet. So we’re asking (for more), because there’s a lot of work to do to get the ship rolling. It’s a lot of work,” she said.

“Anyone can volunteer,” Stefan Sanders, CEO of the Mozel Sanders Foundation, added. ” We have something that the kids can do. If they’re not old enough to be in the kitchen, we have some things for them to color. If they want to write something nice to the people that the food is being delivered to, they can also do that.”

If you aren’t able to volunteer, the Sanders say they will always accept donations.

“It takes $20 to feed a family of four,” Stephanie said. “You can text ‘Mozel’ to 53555; we want everyone to be fed. We don’t want anybody not eating on Thanksgiving Day.”
