Thousands of people visit Winter Park Art Festival
OF THEIR KIDS’ EDUCATION. MEGAN: THE RETREAT WILL CONTINUE THROUGH TUESDAY. IT’S ONE OF THE LARGEST OUTDOOR ART SHOWS IN THE NATION, AND IT TAKES PLACE RIGHT HERE IN CENTRAL FLORIDA. WESH 2’S LIV JOHNSON INTRODUCES US TO THE ARTISTS BEHIND THE WINTER PARK SIDEWALK ART FESTIVAL. LIV: SOMEWHERE BETWEEN 250,000 AND 300,000 PEOPLE WALKED THROUGH PARK AVENUE THIS WEEKEND FOR THE WINTER PARK ART FESTIVAL, AN EVENT THAT’S EARNED SOME NOTORIETY THROUGH IT’S 64 YEARS OF PRODUCTION. >> THERE ARE REALLY GREAT JURORS, THEY AWARD A LOT OF PRIZES, AND IT’S JUST A REALLY HIGH-QUALITY SHOW. LIV: STEPHANIE CROSSMAN, WHO TRAVELED ALL THE WAY FROM MAINE TO ATTEND THE FESTIVAL, USES FISH NETTING TO CREATE 3-DIMENSIONAL PIECES. SHE WAS ONE OF NEARLY 1200 ARTISTS WHO APPLIED TO BE IN THE SHOW. 215 WERE SELECTED. >> I THINK THAT BECAUSE MY ARTFORM IS SO DIFFERENT, I KIND OF MADE IT UP SO NOBODY ELSE DOES IT, SO I DON’T HAVE MUCH COMPETITION. LIV: WINTER PARK ART FESTIVAL COMMITTEE CO-PRESIDENT GREG WITHERSPOON SAYS THERE ARE MORE THAN 30 ARTISTS WHO ARE NEW TO THE FESTIVAL THIS YEAR. IN ADDITION TO SELLING PIECES, THE ARTISTS COMPETE FOR PRIZES. THE BEST OF SHOW AWARD WENT FOR $12,000 ON SATURDAY. >> WE HAVE A BIG PURSE. WE HAVE ONE OF THE LARGEST AWARD PURSES IN THE NATION. ON TOP OF THAT, WE HAVE A PATRONS PROGRAM THAT THIS YEAR IS GOING TO BE UPWARDS OF 90,000 ADDITIONAL DOLLARS THAT IS GOING TO BE SPENT ON ART IN THE PARK. It's one of the largest outdoor art shows in the nation and it takes place right here in Central Florida.Somewhere between 250,000 and 300,000 people walked through Park Avenue this weekend for the Winter Park Art Festival, an event that's earned some notoriety through its 64 years of production."There are really great jurors, they award a lot of prizes, and it's just a really high-quality show," Stephanie Crossman said. Crossman, who traveled all the way from Maine to attend the festival, uses fish netting to create three-dimensional pieces. She was one of nearly 1,200 artists who applied to be in the show, and 215 were selected. "I think my art form is so different. I kind of made it up so nobody else does it, so I don't have much competition," Crossman said. Winter Park Art Festival committee co-president Greg Witherspoon said there are more than 30 artists who are new to the festival this year. In addition to selling pieces, the artists compete for prizes.The Best of Show Award went for $12,000 on Saturday. "We have a big purse. We have one of the largest award purses in the nation. On top of that, we have a patrons program that is going to be upwards of 90,000 additional dollars that is going to be spent on art in the park," Witherspoon said. The event also opened the door for future artists in the community.
