Truliant transforms old Macy’s department store into workplace of the future

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — It’s mostly a place for the behind-the-scenes, day-to-day work of a credit union, but the Truliant Federal Credit Union operations center at Hanes Mall in Winston-Salem represents many economic, design and workplace trends, all in 154,000 square feet.

First, there’s the move by consumers to online buying. And, in retail commercial real estate, there’s a shift away from sprawling, enclosed malls toward stand-alone big boxes or smaller plazas. Both led to leaving former mall property ripe for reuse.

There’s the evolution of personal and small-business financial services that helped Truliant outgrow its Winston-Salem headquarters.

Then there’s the trend toward workplaces designed specifically for hybrid on-site and remote work accelerated by three years of a pandemic. The height of Covid-19 came just as Truliant was starting to design its new digs, buying the credit union some time to figure out what employees would need when they returned, likely with new expectations.

Truliant began moving employees there in January. Chad Frye, Truliant senior vice president for facilities and administrative services, recently led a tour of the facility.
