The Windsor Locks boys’ basketball team may have a target on its back as it entered the CIAC Division V tournament as the 1-seed after a 17-3 regular season.

The Raiders didn’t seem phased, as they took the lead early in the quarterfinal match against Old Saybrook and cruised to a 60-50 victory.

Coach Dan Copes said his team is doing well, but it may have to find another gear to make it to the top.

“We still haven’t put 32 minutes together. We’re still capable of doing more, and that’s going to be our message going forward,” Copes said, adding that consistency is key, as is patience.

“We have the potential to do great things. We just need 32 minutes of great things,” he said.

Senior Malike Alassani had 22 of the Raiders’ points. Fellow senior Evan Courtney had 12.
Aaron Tolve led Old Saybrook with 19.

Keeping mental focus while sitting atop the standings is something the coach said may be beyond his control, but he has faith in his players. There may also be some thoughts about unfinished business, as the Raiders went to the semifinal round last year, but didn’t advance to the finals.

“I don’t know what’s in their heads. We talk about it all the time, about how seeds mean nothing, especially after last year, eking our way into it at 9-10 and then making a nice run to the semis,” he said. “It kind of rolled into this year. So, really I don’t think the numbers mean too much. But, they’re hungry and I think they’re looking forward to doing something special.”

At press time, Windsor Locks was set to play 4-seed Portland in the semifinals on March 15. Whatever the outcome for the season, Copes said his team has battled through some injuries and illnesses, as most teams do, but has really pulled together as a unit.

“The team just comes back together, stronger every time,” he said. “I’m really proud of them. They’re a great group.”
