AREA ROUNDUP: Demons slug Spartans again

Fike High posted a baker’s dozen in its first turn at bat and coasted to its second 3-A Quad County Conference varsity softball win with a 20-4 three-inning domination of Smithfield-Selma on Wednesday, April 24.
The host Golden Demons, now 5-13 overall and 2-9 in QCC play, only needed four hits as Spartans pitcher Ana Cano-Razo issued 11 bases on balls in two innings. Leyla Lopez belted a two-run double in the first inning while Cailin Powers, Kassidy Parrish and Selah Escamilla each had a hit and an RBI.
Cayley Jones pitched two no-hit innings for Fike to get the win while Araya Outlaw worked the third and final inning.
Kelcey Benson and Natalie Silva Deras each drove in a run for Smithfield-Selma (1-14, 0-10 QCC), which lost to Fike home 26-3 on Friday, April 19.
Fike will play at East Wake in Wendell on Friday.

Fike’s Boyette closer to QCC title
GOLDSBORO — Fike High senior Ethan Boyette all but made his third straight 3-A Quad County Conference boys golf individual championship official Wednesday at Lane Tree Country Club in Goldsboro when he was the medalist for the sixth time in seven QCC outings this spring.
Boyette fired a 37-34—71 to win by two strokes over West Johnston’s Hayden Campbell. Boyette leads Campbell’s Wildcats teammate Colby Stephens by 18 strokes in the drop total (lowest round omitted) with just next week’s conference championship match at Willow Springs Country Club remaining.
South Johnston maintained its lead in the team standings with a score of 315, led by Brady Carroll’s 41-35—76. West Johnston, which trails the Trojans by 59 strokes in the overall standings, was second with a 319, followed by Hunt (326), Fike (334), Southern Wayne (338), C.B. Aycock (356), East Wake (382) and Smithfield-Selma (480).
Noah Gurganus and Joe Glover each shot 39-39—78 while Landon Kintzele (83), Thomas Pope (87) and Davis Mitchell (87) also figured into the scoring for the Warriors. Adding to Fike’s total with Boyette were Jack Joyner (86), Landon Bass (88), Charles and Thurston (89).
Talan Gardner’s 85 set the pace for C.B. Aycock.
Firebirds take 2nd in Big East
WELDON — Southern Nash claimed the runner-up spot in 2-A/3-A Big East Conference boys golf after firing a 381 to finish behind Roanoke Rapids at the conference championship match Wednesday at Chockoyotte Country Club.
Juniors Gavin Craft and Ross Hinnant each earned All-Big East accolades for the Firebirds, who will next compete at the NCHSAA 3-A Mideast Regional on Monday, May 6, at Highland Country Club in Fayetteville.
TRACK AND FIELD
SN teams take 3rd in Big East championships
ROCKY MOUNT — The Southern Nash girls and boys track and field teams placed third at the 2-A/3-A Big East Conference championship meet Wednesday, April 24, at Rocky Mount High.
The Firebirds got first-place finishes from Tylik Mitchell in the long jump (22 feet, 2 inches) and triple jump (44-2) and Chris Harris in the shot put (44-10).
Mitchell was gunning for a sweep of his events but lost the 100-meter dash to Rocky Mount junior Isaiah Silver by a hundredth of a second. Silver crossed in 11.19 to Mitchell’s 11.20. Mitchell was third in the 200, finishing in 23.11 behind Silver (22.71) and Nash Central’s Jaaziah Jones (23.05).
Harris was upset in discus by Bunn’s Cannon Parrish, whose throw of 148-1 made Harris’ 139-0 the runner-up.
D.J. Pridgen won the 300 hurdles in 41.04 and was second in the 110 hurdles.
Southern Nash swept the 4×100 relays with the Ladybirds finishing 53.48 seconds and the Firebirds clocking in a 44.74 seconds.
Brianna Wimberly was the only other first-place finisher for the Ladybirds as she won the 100 hurdles in 17.72.
