UNCW Volleyball Adds Four For 2023

WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW head volleyball coach Dottie Hampton has announced the additions of Carol Grubba de Oliviera, A'siya Magazine, Charlotte Cronister and Maris Grant to play for the Seahawks in the 2023-24 season.

"I am so excited about this recruiting class for 2023," said Hampton. "I believe they will all come in and contribute to an already hard-working, dedicated, and special group of young ladies. Their diverse skill in each position will help propel UNCW volleyball forward in the CAA."

De Oliviera hails from Curitiba, Brazil, where she competed in both indoor and beach volleyball as a member of her club program, Clube Duque de Caxias, Curitiba, Brazil. She was honored as the Most Valuable Player of the Curitiba and the region and was named the best outside hitter in the state.

Hampton on De Oliviera:
"Carol is going to be a great addition to both the indoor and beach programs. She is a dynamic player who has garnered a lot of success on the court and in the sand. Carol and her family have sacrificed a lot in order to reach her goals and I know she will make an impact on our program. Carol will bring vast international experience being that she has played not only in Brazil but on the world stage. Most of all Carol comes from a great family and is such a great person, her smile is infectious, and her bubbly personality will fit in well with our team."

Magazine competed for UNCW volleyball alum Jennifer Mallard at Winter Springs High School in Winter Springs, Fla. Her senior season, she played in 79 sets, totaling 293 kills (3.7 kills per set) and added 39 blocks and 120 digs. A'siya was named first-team All-Conference and was the team MVP her senior season. She was a second-team All-Conference selection in her junior season. Magazine also played for 17 OT O Felix club of Orlando, Fla.

"A'siya comes from a great high school and club programs out of Orlando, Fla. Playing under former UNCW Seahawk, Jennifer Mallard, and at OTVA (one of the top volleyball clubs in the country) A'siya has received some of the best training around. Not just an athlete, A'siya, is academically strong which goes with our academic standards for our team. She is athletic and jumpy; she hits hard and is a joy to watch.  She has won on both the high school and club level which made her a highly sought after recruit. We are proud that she chose to be a SEAHAWK."

Cronister is a graduate transfer from Northwestern, where she played for the Wildcats in the Big 10 Conference for four seasons. She collected 451 digs over those four seasons, including a career-best 239 digs in her freshman season. Cronister also totaled 50 aces. As a senior, she recorded a season-high eight digs against Purdue. Her career-high for digs was 18 against Loyola-Chicago in 2019.

"Charlotte has done it at the highest level of collegiate volleyball. Playing in the Big Ten, she brings leadership, a great work ethic, and a perspective that will serve our younger players. You will see Charlotte flying around the court digging balls and saving plays and you will see her do with all that with a great big smile on her face. She is a competitor and the joy she has for the game is electric. She has demonstrated her dedication and skill playing against some of the best teams in the country and now she is a SEAHAWK, and we couldn't be more thrilled."

Maris Grant of Wilmington, N.C., rounds out the incoming class. Grant, a setter, doled out over 1,000 assists while playing at Coastal Christian. Grant served as the team captain her senior season and helped the Centurions to a Final Four appearance in the state tournament. She competed for NC Coastal Volleyball Club in Wilmington.

"Maris is a hometown girl, and she has grown up watching UNCW Volleyball, so we are happy that she is now an official SEAHAWK. She will bring depth and balance to our setting crew. With her volleyball training from NC Coastal Volleyball Club, Maris will add a great dimension to running our offense. Don't be fooled by her sweet smile and quiet demeanor, she is a competitor and can run an offense well."
