First Alert Forecast: Tropical Depression Two forms as Atlantic Hurricane Season begins

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - The 2023 Atlantic Hurricane Season is officially underway now through November 30. In this time of heightened vigilance and preparedness for the Cape Fear Region, make sure you read and heed the comprehensive, local storm content assembled at wect.com/hurricane.

Just in time for the first day of the season, Tropical Depression Two was born out of a low pressure system known as Invest 91-L in the Gulf of Mexico. Should this system continue to organize and strengthen into a tropical storm, it would get the name Arlene. The National Hurricane Center could make that call soon, however given the jet streams that are set to claw at this system, it is likely to neither become strong nor disruptive storm to the Carolinas.

Closer to home our somewhat coolish late May pattern should continue through the opening days of June. Variably cloudy skies and occasional passing showers or storms remain in the mix through early next week. We may finally see a slight heat surge Tuesday to Thursday with highs returning to the middle 80s and muggier overnight lows.
