Senate Bill 37 was signed into state law by Governor John Carney at a heartwarming ceremony hosted by Humane Animal Partners (HAP) at their Wilmington campus. The bill, initiated by Senator Jack Walsh, an eminent animal lover, was passed unanimously, signifying the overwhelming Support for animal welfare across the Delaware Legislative Assembly. This sweeping Support, combined with the public enthusiasm, paints a picture of a state united in its mission of animal protection.

In his statement, Senator Walsh emphasized the significance of the newly passed bill, noting, “Delaware animal shelters take in thousands of pets each year — all of whom are waiting to find their forever home. Senate Bill 37 reaffirms the General Assembly’s Support for animal welfare and our commitment to ensuring that every rescued pet will be cared for, loved, and protected against abuse.”

With this historic move, Delaware takes the lead in recognizing the plight of the millions of sheltered dogs nationwide. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals estimates that there are millions of dogs in shelters across the United States. By making rescue dogs the state’s official dog, Delaware hopes to spotlight the importance of animal adoption and animal welfare organizations.

This milestone is also a nod to HAP’s 150th anniversary, marking a century and a half of tireless work in rescuing and caring for animals. The organization, formerly known as the Delaware SPCA and Delaware Humane Association, has three adoption centers located in Wilmington, Stanton/Christiana, and Rehoboth Beach.

In the words of HAP’s CEO, Patrick Carroll, “It feels so fitting to recognize this milestone bill at Humane Animal Partners, where we have been serving the community and animals for 150 years.”

Join Delaware in this wonderful initiative! Let’s all step up to show our commitment to animal welfare. Consider adopting a rescue dog and providing a forever home for these loving animals. Not ready for adoption? You can still lend your Support to local animal shelters and rescue organizations. Your small act of kindness can make a world of difference!
