Eau Claire, La Crosse counties, northwest Wisconsin face heat warning
The National Weather Service issued an extreme heat warning for many counties in western Wisconsin, including Eau Claire and La Crosse. An extreme heat warning means that heat indexes are expected to reach up to 115, which can significantly increase heat-related illnesses, according to the National Weather Service. Eau Claire County is hosting the Eaux Claires Music Festival this weekend after an eight-year hiatus. Here's the full list of Wisconsin counties under extreme heat warning: Ashland Barron Bayfield Buffalo Burnett Chippewa Crawford Douglas Dunn Eau Claire Grant Jackson La Crosse Monroe Peppin Pierce Polk Richland Rusk Sawyer St. Croix Trempeauleau Vernon Washburn The eastern half of the state, from Wisconsin Dells to Milwaukee, is currently under a heat advisory, which means that heat index values of 100 to 103 degrees are expected. The warning is "very unlikely" to expand into southeast Wisconsin because clouds are expected to keep temperatures low, National Weather Service meteorologist Michaela Heeren said. Heat wave worries public health experts
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) - County public health officials are worried about this heat wave because it’s just so difficult to cool off. “What makes this heat a little bit more concerning than usual is that there is not really a ton of relief that is occurring at the evening hours, so with temperatures that are continuing to stay in the 70s, it doesn’t give much people much relief from the heat,” said Joe Kelscheur, the emergency-preparedness specialist for the Eau Claire City-County Public Health Department. “A mixture of that along with the temperature and the humidity both remaining high kind of remaining high for multiple days at a time, that creates an environment that just makes it harder for people to cool down.”
