Family and friends gathered on Monday in memory of Mike “Tomlinese” Tomlin, 32.

“[He was a] singer, rapper, producer, engineer. He was one of my DJs at one time. He was just an amazing spirit,” said friend, Jamal Campbell.

Friends who knew Tomlin said he had the world at his fingertips. A well-known Pittsburgh producer, Tomlin was also an artist who sang, wrote, and even created jingles.

On Sunday morning when Campbell learned that his longtime friend had been shot and killed, he was in shock.

According to county police, just before midnight on Saturday, emergency crews were called to Franklin Avenue in Wilkinsburg. When they arrived, they found one man had been shot and killed.

“A lot of the music won’t be the same because he put a definite stamp, his stamp on the music,” Campbell said.

Kiki Brown, a radio personality for WAMO 100.7, and former co-worker of Tomlin, said she couldn’t believe the news.

“This is a tremendous loss to the music industry for the city of Pittsburgh,” Brown said.

Brown said she recalls Tomlin rising early and working late at WAMO 100.7 to hone his craft and develop new talent throughout the city.

“He was very dedicated to his work, and his work ethic was impeccable,” she said.

Friends told Channel 11 that Tomlin had returned to Pittsburgh only a year or so ago after living in Los Angeles for some time and said it’s devastating for this to have happened in his hometown.

“When he left, I thought big things were going to happen for him. I said, ‘When you blow up, don’t forget me,’” Campbell said.

The medical examiner’s office has yet to release their report on the exact cause of death, but county police are asking any with information to contact them.
