WICHITA FALLS ( KFDX/KJTL ) — We’re just a couple of months away from the 2024-2025 school year, and there’s good news coming out of the Wichita Falls Independent School District.

In a special session on Tuesday, June 11, Superintendent Dr. Donny Lee said the two new high schools, Memorial and Legacy, will be open for the first day of school on August 15.

Lee said there are some areas at Legacy High that might not be completed by the first day of school, including the completion of the auditorium. Due to some shipping delays of certain necessary materials, it won’t be ready by August 15.

However, Lee said that overall, he’s happy with the progress made so far.

“We’re building two high schools that are 400,000 square feet each, and we’re doing that simultaneously,” Lee said. “To have this one delay out of this two-and-a-half-year project is pretty impressive. The auditoriums and the fine arts facilities that our students are getting are first class and unbelievable.”

If the materials needed are shipped by the date they were given, they’re expecting the legacy auditorium to be open and operational by October 1 at the latest.

Dr. Lee said other items that still need to be completed include the landscaping around both schools, which the steady flow of rain has impacted over the past month or two.
