Bison With The “Zoomies” Chases Elk Around The North Carolina Zoo

Your furry household friend isn't the only animal that "gets the zoomies." As it turns out, your golden retriever and a 2,000 pound bison have more in common than you might think. Let's be real... you wouldn't want a big ol' bison jumping up in your lap. But I said that because a doggo's favorite thing to do might just be North America's largest land mammal's favorite thing to do as well. What's that favorite thing? Expending sudden bursts of energy by running around playfully, which has aptly been nicknamed as "getting the zoomies." The official term for the "zoomies" is actually represented by the acronym FRAPs, which stands for frenetic random activity periods. These FRAPs typically happen with dogs and cats, where they'll all of the sudden run around at high speeds - sometimes in circles. The "zoomies" usually fizzle out within a couple of minutes. And I know I said it usually only happens with cats and dogs, but this video below from the North Carolina Zoo shows that FRAPS can affect bison as well. This bison and elk range got a burst of energy from one of the active bison trying to play with an elk in the exhibit. The North Carolina Zoo thinks that the cooler temps that hit the east coast state probably had something to do with the bison being in a good enough mood to go for an aimless, sporadic run: "A drop to cooler temperatures call for Bison zoomies! I'd be inclined to stop by if I could see an animal that's close to weighing a ton happily sprinting around an exhibit like a dog in a living room after getting a treat.
