( WTRF ) – Many parts of the Ohio Valley dealt with back-to-back flooding this week after severe weather caused the river to rise once again – and people began moving into Wheeling’s newest location for the homeless.

7News Anchor Annalise Murphy looks back at the week’s top headlines.

The Ohio River expected to flood again

The Ohio Valley got hit with some severe rainfall Thursday night, which caused the Ohio River to flood parts of the valley once again.

Around three inches of rainfall over regions to our north, like Pittsburgh, triggered flooding downstream into areas like Wheeling Island, Moundsville, and New Cumberland.

The Director of the Ohio County Emergency Management Agency, Lou Vargo, says two floods in less than 2 weeks is something he has never seen in his 34 years with the EMA.

The Ohio River has started to recede.

Cemetery with about 150 tombstones in West Virginia destroyed due to severe weather might not be cleaned up for 2 years or longer

During the first major flooding, a devasting mudslide destroyed nearly 150 tombstones at the Mt. Zion Cemetary.

Charles Yocke, the president and a volunteer for many years at the cemetery, said he was not prepared for how much damage the mudslide caused.

On Friday, a historical preservation group from Charleston and a cemetery restoration company were at the scene to help gather information. In terms of when it will all be cleaned up, Yocke says it could take up to 2 years or even longer.

The cemetery is closed to public access, and if anyone is caught walking around the mudslide, they could be arrested.

People are moving in as Wheeling’s new homeless camp opens up

Staying in Wheeling,

People in Wheeling have begun moving into the new homeless camp that’s exempt from the city’s public camping ban.

The camp, off Peninsula Street, is 70 yards long, with separate spaces for each campsite.

They say the rules are the same as any park or campground–keep the area clean and free of bad behavior.

The site has two portable toilets and one dumpster.

Volunteers and homeless advocates have worked to prepare the site, bringing pallets, tents, tarps, and sleeping bags.
