WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (WETM) – The historic racetrack at Watkins Glen International is busy once again with the sounds of thousands of racing fans and NASCAR personnel. Gates opened to campers at 7 a.m. as crews worked on setting up “fan experience zones” and concert stages.

Gates opened to campers at 7 a.m. on Wednesday.

More than 100,000 fans are expected at the races. For many, a weekend at the Glen is also about what happens off the track. Tony Colitti told us it’s a chance to spend time with family and reunite with friends made decades ago.

“I make the same joke every year,” Colitti said. “The cars hit the track, and I’ll say, what a way to ruin a great vacation with all this noise. But, yeah, we’re here to watch the race. You know, we’re here to hang out, just the guys hanging out.

“I got this particular site in 1997 when they opened up for infield camping, for reserve for family camping. I was on the phone hit and redial for 45 minutes until I got the last infield trackside site. So, we’ve been here for 27 years this year.”

“The gentleman who camps here, I met him in 98. You meet people here as you walk around, and you can become friends for life.” Colitti said.

“I like coming here and hanging out with my friend Bill over here, camp out, drinking and cooking out, and having a good ole time,” another fan told 18 News. “Yea, I like to meet all sorts of people,” said Denise Dewind.

Many fans spent the day setting up their camps around the track.

Not far from the track, fans will also be able to enjoy several “fan experience zones” for all ages. Several stages are also being set up for Q & A sessions with drivers and nightly concerts. Crews are also getting the bowling alley ready so you can go “Bowling at the Glen.”

The Glen also has no shortage of food and bar options. For many, the meals are homemade.

“We set up awning to awning. We have a menu set up for the weekend,” Colitti said.

Engines will start roaring here at the track on Friday at 6 pm. for the Arca Menards Series. On Saturday at 3:30 p.m. the NASCAR Xfinity Series returns to the Glen. The NASCAR Cup Series hits the gas on Sunday at 3 p.m.

“It’s going to be beautiful this weekend, all in the 80’s, no rain, perfect. Almost like in August.”
