Disturbance off Southeastern U.S. likely to form, Tropical Storm Gordon remains in Atlantic

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a disturbance off the Southeastern coast of the U.S., as Tropical Storm Gordon remains in the Central Atlantic Saturday.

A non-tropical area of low pressure, located a few hundred miles off the coastlines of Northern Florida and southeast of Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina, has a 50% chance for development over the next seven days.

The NHC said the system could develop subtropical or tropical characteristics as it sits over warm waters, as the disturbance tracks north.

“A non-tropical area of low pressure is expected to form on Sunday or Monday and could acquire some tropical characteristics over the warm waters of the Gulf Stream. There’s a 50% chance of a tropical depression forming as the system moves toward the Carolina coast,” Max Defender 8 Meteorologist Eric Stone said.

In the central Atlantic, Tropical Storm Gordon continues to move west-northwestward at 9 mph in a “poorly organized” manner, the hurricane center said.

“Tropical Storm Gordon continues to move westward as a weak tropical storm with winds of 40 mph. Gordon is expected to encounter drier air and be downgraded to a depression over the coming days and could regenerate back into a tropical storm, but will eventually move north into cooler waters and not impact any land areas,” Stone added.

The storm has maximum sustained winds at 45 mph, but is not a threat to the U.S. as of this report.
