WEXFORD COUNTY (WWJ) - Two children are dead and one was seriously injured after a passenger vehicle struck an Amish buggy in Northern Michigan on Monday morning.

According to the Wexford County Sheriff’s Office, the fatal crash occurred around 8:15 a.m. at East 16 Road and North 39 Road in Cedar Creek Township, just north of Cadillac.

Deputies said the vehicle was traveling east on East 16 when it collided with the Amish buggy as it pulled into the intersection.

Three children in the buggy were ejected as a result of the crash. The sheriff’s office said a 11-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.

As reported by 9&10 News, a social media user who said they were a witness to the collision said the horse pulling the buggy appeared to spook and "bolted" out into traffic.

The injured child, identified as a 9-year-old girl, was airlifted to Devos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids with serious injuries.

The sheriff's office said the driver, a 48-year-old Manton man, and three passengers in the motor vehicle were not hurt. At this time, investigators found that speed does not appear to be a factor in the crash.

The Wexford County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Michigan State Police, MMR, Cedar Creek Township Fire Department, Manton Fire Department and the Colfax Township Fire Department.
