WESTON, W.Va. (WV News) — There will be disruptions along U.S. Route 19 in Weston, effective immediately, as a bridge is being built from North River Avenue to Main Avenue. Street Commissioner for the City of Weston Michael Starett discussed the construction that is taking place.
“It is the Division of Highways’ project, but it is in the city. When the bridge is done, it will belong to the Division of Highways. We [the City of Weston] are affiliated with it.”
Starett also warns that drivers should be aware of temporary traffic lights while the construction is ongoing.
“They just started on the Haleville side, and they should be moving to the Shadybrook side sometime this week. They’ve got stoplights up on the old Jackson Mill Road.”
West Virginia Department of Transportation Division of Highways District 7 Engineer Brian Cooper discussed the phases of the project and the approximate cost.
“The total cost of the construction is approximately $4,324,271.87, with $3,459,417.49 from federal funds and $864,854.38 from the state. The estimated completion date is Fall of 2024. Estimated completion dates are for planning purposes and can be impacted by weather, materials, and unforeseen circumstances,” Cooper said. “There are four stages of the project. Phase 1: Install traffic control for CR (county route) 1 and U.S. Route 19, construct sanitary sewer relocation on CR 1, and construct portion of proposed roadway on CR 1, including retaining wall. Phase 2: CR 1 roadway construction, bridge construction to follow. Phase 3: Complete bridge construction, and finish remaining roadway. Phase 4: Tie-in existing overlay to bridge, perform final seeding and mulching, remove traffic control devices, and open to traffic.”
The WVDOH plans to keep the public informed via press release for any time when traffic is impacted by the construction and when the opening date approaches.
Starett believes the bridge will allow large vehicles to travel safely in Weston.
“It’s to get the traffic to flow instead of coming up across West Second Street; it’s hard for tractor trailers to make the turn on the righthand side down North River Avenue, so this way, our larger trucks can get across safely.”
The estimated completion date is set for Fall of 2024 with regards to weather, materials and unforeseen circumstances.
