WESTMORELAND, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) – Everyone’s heard of a fire truck escort when you win the state championship, but for one New York State basketball team, it happened a little further from home than expected.

The Victor Blue Devils out of Section V in Western New York were heading home from their victory in the New York State Class AA Boys Basketball Championships on Sunday, March 19. Unfortunately, their bus from Glens Falls got into an accident on the New York State Thruway at Exit 32.  In all, 17 people were involved in the crash.

Fortunately for the Blue Devils, the Westmoreland Volunteer Fire Department was on call, and was there to help.

The department was able to let the team to stay at the station as it waited for another bus, while getting a picture with the championship team. Fortunately, no one was injured in the accident and the team was able to get home eventually.

The team was greeted back home — with their own town’s fire engines escorting them — later in the day.
