In Westmoreland County, those that attended the School Board meeting on the 15th of May got a rundown on how summer school and summer programs are going to run, with deputy superintendent Kathy Rice giving the details.
“We have a lot going on this summer,” Rice stated. “We have something going on throughout the entire summer. We have many programs and services available to students.”
At the time of the meeting, Rice did not have stats or numbers for the students that would have to take part in the summer academy, whether it be due to abysmal grades or chronic absenteeism, but she indicated that the large number of staff signing on was a good omen.
“The more staff we have, the more students we can serve,” she explained. “But I’ll have the numbers at our next meeting.”
The schedule rundown is as follows. Summer Academy is taking place Mondays through Thursdays for the rest of this month, up to the 29th with a holiday on the 19th of June for Juneteenth.
Afterwards, Mathematica runs from the 5th of July to the 21st on Monday through Friday. Once that is out of the way, the Northern Neck Regional Governor’s School kicks in, from July 24th to the 28th.
At the same time, new teachers will be getting their orientation done. Finally, as the summer vacation draws to a close, pre-service week runs from July 31st to August 4th. The schools finally open their doors to students again on August 7th.
