WESTLAKE, Ohio –

Car theft: Hilliard Boulevard:

A Westlake Recreation Center patron called the police department at 12:15 p.m. on May 31 to report that their vehicle had been stolen out of the parking lot.

The victim was working out when someone grabbed the keys out of the facility and located the vehicle in the lot. Officers took a theft report and entered the car into police databases. At about 2:15 p.m., Middleburg Heights police spotted the stolen car in their city. It stopped after a brief pursuit.

A 16-year-old Westlake girl was driving, and a juvenile female was in the passenger’s seat.

The juvenile driver is charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle in juvenile court. She was turned over to a relative.

Physical control: Detroit Road

A concerned caller at 7:30 a.m. on May 27 reported to the Westlake Police Department that a woman was slumped over the wheel of a red Ford Escape parked in the lot of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Officers knocked on the windows of the vehicle to wake her up, and it appeared that she had urinated on herself. She said she thought she was in Grafton. Officers spotted an open bottle of Crown Royal whiskey in the car.

The 31-year-old Elyria resident took a field sobriety test. Officers then arrested the woman for having physical control of a vehicle while intoxicated. She refused a breath test at the Westlake jail. As a result, her license was suspended.

The Avon Police Department at 7:15 p.m. on May 27 called Westlake police to report that they were out with a vehicle that struck the barricade on the closed Avon Road that connects the two cities.

The driver had been eastbound on Avon Road and apparently did not see that there was a large gate across the road at the Westlake border. Both the male driver and a female passenger appeared to be highly intoxicated. Signs of drug use and an open container of Crown Royal whiskey were observed in the damaged vehicle.

The 26-year-old male driver was field tested and arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Officers report recovering suspected Xanax and marijuana. The driver, who listed a Massillon address, was charged with OVI, failure to control, and possession of marijuana. The passenger, a 21-year-old Canton woman, was charged with disorderly conduct while intoxicated, possession of Xanax, and possession of marijuana.
