Otterbein University’s entire community is committed to the career success of its students — from the professors to the support staff and even members of the board of trustees.

During spring semester, Otterbein Board of Trustees member and Chief Audit Executive at Nationwide, Greg Jordan, hosted an on-campus information session about internal audit-related career opportunities at Nationwide — complete with pizza and soda! He also brought four of his team members who are part of Nationwide Internal Audit’s Data and Analytics practice to network with the students and answer their questions. 

Nationwide, a Fortune 100 company based in Columbus, Ohio, is one of the largest and strongest diversified insurance and financial services organizations in the United States.  

Since he joined Otterbein’s Board of Trustees, Jordan has become a familiar face on campus, networking with faculty and finding ways to connect with students. He hopes to encourage more students to apply for internships and jobs at Nationwide. 

“I see the types of courses that are being taught here aren’t things that a lot of my current staff have, so it’s important to bring up people with different skill sets who can teach folks that have been around,” Jordan said. “I understand what they’re taking, I see the types of classes, and it just helps me think about how I can round out my team with Otterbein students and the types of learning that makes sense and that I need.” 

According to Jordan, there is a strong demand for students with accounting, mathematics, data analytics, actuarial science, computer science and statistics backgrounds. “Those are all the emerging technology and digital skills that we need for our department to succeed — and that I think Nationwide, as a whole, needs for our digital future that’s coming.” 

In addition to the digital skills, Jordan thinks Otterbein students bring soft skills that he values in members of his team. 

“Otterbein students, I would say, have a nature of being inquisitive, trying to problem-solve, taking a broad perspective — the kind of traits that I would say start to get on the edge of emotional intelligence,” Jordan said. 

Jordan began his career at Nationwide in 2001 and has served in several business and finance leadership roles. He currently oversees Nationwide’s Office of Internal Audit activities. In this role, Jordan is responsible for reviewing and communicating the results of internal audit work and serves as a business partner and strategic advisor on various business cabinets. He previously held the positions of vice president and chief financial officer, exclusive channel property and casualty operations, and vice president, product management for Nationwide Financial’s fixed and offshore annuities. 

Prior to joining Nationwide, Jordan spent six years at The Midland Life Insurance Company/Swiss Re where he held several roles including vice president strategic planning, vice president operations, and controller. He began his career with Ernst & Young, where he spent 11 years and was a senior manager in the insurance and financial services practice group. He is a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Internal Auditor, fellow in the Life Management Institute and has received his certification in Risk Management Assurance. He serves as a member of the Columbus City Schools Audit and Accountability Committee, board member for Lutheran Social Services Board of Trustees, Otterbein University Board of Trustees, and Institute of Internal Audit’s (IIA) International Exam Development Committee.
