Sangamon County will lose more than just hotel revenue after new tax | Opinion

The Sangamon County Board’s decision this week to approve the full 3% hotel tax is deeply disappointing. It’s disappointing not because our industry opposes investment in Springfield, but because the Board moved forward without answering fundamental questions about the tax’s impact, necessity and long-term consequences. The Springfield Hotel & Lodging Association (SHLA) has been clear and consistent in our support to bring more visitors, conventions and economic activity to Springfield. \We support responsible improvements to the Bank of Springfield Center. We support growth. What we have made clear all along, including in our testimony to the board Tuesday evening, is that SHLA could not support adopting a permanent tax increase of this magnitude without the county demonstrating why the maximum rate is required or how it will strengthen – rather than weaken – our competitiveness. Farmland Values Unchanged According to Farm Credit Study

Farmland values throughout central and southern Illinois held steady from last year, according to the 2026 study of 22 benchmark farms by the Farm Credit Illinois (FCI) appraisal team. Land values had a dramatic run-up beginning in 2003 until peaking in 2014. The first decline in more than a decade occurred in 2015 and continued a slight decline through 2018. From that point, land values increased for six consecutive years and hit new highs in 2024. Overall values had a slight decrease in 2025 of 4.41%. From July of 2025 to July of 2026, seven of the 22 farms decreased in value, seven increased, and eight reflected no change. In total, the benchmark farms reflected no overall change. When considering the individual benchmarks values, the year-over-year percentage changes ranged from –8.22% to 12.5%. The variation reinforces that agricultural real estate is a location-specific asset. “While farmland transaction volume decreased this past year, demand and prices paid for Illinois farmland remains stable,” says Kent Reid, Farm Credit Illinois chief appraiser. “Although commodity prices have improved modestly, profit margins remain constrained, which may place downward pressure on land values in the coming year.” Read an in-depth analysis in the full report at
