Chase between suspect, robbery victim ends in fire on I-15

A robbery attempt in West Valley City ended in a rollover crash that ended in flames on the SR-201 ramp to Interstate 15 Thursday, police said.

Fire crews responded to put out the fire and police took one person into custody.

Police say a grocery delivery driver was making a delivery at an apartment complex at 4000 South Redwood Road when they noticed the suspect attempting to steal their vehicle. After being seen, the suspect then fled in another vehicle occupied by two others.

West Valley City Police Lieutenant Johnson says this situation highlights the danger of following a suspect, and that anyone in a similar situation should stay put and not put themselves and others at risk.

"I'm not aware of any other vehicles being hit, just the suspect vehicle that flipped. But obviously there could have been a lot more danger to the public with this guy following them. so, just let them go, let us try and find them," said Johnson.

The delivery driver pursued the suspects from Redwood Road and ended on the SR-201 ramp to I-15 when the suspect's vehicle lost control and rolled over, catching fire. One suspect remained in the vehicle and was placed into custody while the other two left the scene in a separate vehicle.

The crash and the incident that led up to it remain under investigation.
