WEST UNION, W.Va. (WV News) — The football careers of Logan McCartney and Braylon Hilliard are far from over.
As McCartney heads to West Liberty and Hilliard signs with Glenville State, both players will have a chance to keep playing the sport that they love. Instead, this weekend’s Battle Against Cystic Fibrosis All-Star Football Game is one of the last times they will play at the high school level.
“It’s a great experience to get out here with a bunch of new guys,” McCartney said. “Overall, it’s a good experience for a good cause. We’re meeting all kinds of good guys, and we’re ready to put it on Ohio.”
The game is also a bit of a networking opportunity. For some, this is the first chance to play with future college teammates. It’s also a day to regroup with old friends that you played with in youth football.
“I get to play with one of my longtime friends from Bridgeport,” said Hilliard. “I also get to meet a lot of the guys I’m going to play college ball with. It’s another good opportunity.”
During kickoff drills, players stood on the sideline chatting about their past matchups.
“I picked you off that game,” one said.
“We won,” the other said in response.
Playing an all-star game is also the last chance that you get to talk smack with the guys you’ve faced off with.
“It’s like a new bond,” McCartney said of his all-star teammates. “Before, it’s like we hate each other, but now we’re family. We love each other.”
McCartney will also play in the North-South Classic. It’ll be the true last game for him at the high school level. In the meantime, he’s living in the last few moments under the Friday night lights.
“It feels good to be selected for a game like this,” McCartney said. “I’m looking forward to more in college, but there’s nothing like High School football.”
Hilliard is listed as a WR/DB for the game while McCartney will play on the offensive line. All proceeds from the game will benefit the fight against cystic fibrosis. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at St. Marys High School on Friday.
