LAFAYETTE — Four students including a freshmen jumper proved their status as the top athletes from the period that encompassed April 15 through April 20.
Meet the four J&C Athlete of the Week nominees.
Logan Marsell
School: McCutcheon
Sport: Baseball
Class: Senior
Team contributions: McCutcheon is red hot once again with the backing of Marsell's bat. Marsell went 3 for 7 with four RBI combined against Kankakee Valley last Friday and Zionsville last Saturday. Marsell's defense in the outfield has been another key layer for McCutcheon that has won 10 straight games and enters its 2-game series against Kokomo entering Tuesday. Marsell also led the Mavericks to their first regular season sweep of Harrison since 2021.
Andrew Hostetler
School: Harrison
Sport: Volleyball
Class: Senior
Team contributions: Hostetler has been on a tear since Harrison fell to Lafayette Jeff at home on April 11. Hostetler has responded by leading Harrison to five consecutive wins over McCutcheon last Tuesday and against Kankakee Valley, Hammond Bishop Noll, Lawrence North and Covenant Christian last Saturday. Hostetler had 12 kills against McCutcheon, 11 against Kankakee Valley and 15 against Covenant Christian while posting a kill percentage of 40% or better in four of five games.
Maddi Nevett
School: Tri-County
Sport: Softball
Team contributions: Nevett has the Cavaliers riding momentum with seven straight wins since losing its season opener to Harrison 14-2. Nevett hit a walkoff home run to beat defending IHSAA Class 1A Regional and Sectional champion Kouts 14-12. Nevett tossed a five inning shutout against North White with nine strikeouts and tossed a complete game with seven strikeouts to beat defending Class 1A Sectional champion Delphi 7-3 last Saturday.
Sabrina Willis
School: Harrison
Sport: Track and Field
Class: Freshman
Team contributions: Willis is emerging on the track scene and earned top finishes in the long jump and 100 meters at the West Lafayette Relays last Saturday and a home meet against North Montgomery last Tuesday. Willis ran the 100 meters in 13.09 seconds and jumped 16 feet eight inches last Tuesday. She tied for second in the long jump with a distance of 15 feet and 11 inches.
